Vandoliers are returning to Europe with "The Vandoliers"

04-04-2023

Vandoliers wanted to ensure the raw power of their live sets was properly translated into the studio. With this their fourth album, they have certainly succeeded. Having been on the road with the likes of Flogging Molly and Turnpike Troubadours they felt they had to harness the combination of a punk attitude and the country tradition and make it theirs.

On their last S/T album they strike a gutsy balance distinguishing the ways punk and country relate to each other as music for freewheelers, walking a line between ecstatic chaos and hip-swinging precision. Mashing one flavor of rebel music with another, granted, reads like a cheap and easy recipe for a sound too muddled to justify the exercise. Vandoliers give a lively, throat-scratched, whiskey-soaked workshop on the finer points of weaving Southern twangs with Gold Coast distortion. One minute they play in the key of The Strangers and Buck Owens; the next they switch over to Descendents and Dropkick Murphys.

"The Vandoliers" is a manifesto, both sonically and lyrically. It’s an assertion of the band’s distinct character, their sonic rebelliousness, and big, bold stage presence. They’ve got range, too, but that should be expected from a band that deftly blends mariachi horns with country-punk rhythms. With this S/T album the band is returning to Europe in April:
