The Devil Makes Three tour UK/Europe with new album "Spirits"

Tue 10 Jun 2025

The Devil Makes Three has spent over two decades blurring the lines between folk, blues, and punk, creating a raw, genre-defying sound rooted in American storytelling. Formed in 2002 in Santa Cruz, California by Pete Bernhard and Cooper McBean, and now joined by longtime collaborator MorganEve Swain, the trio is known for their high-energy acoustic performances and fiercely loyal fanbase. Their new album, Spirits, marks a return to stripped-down roots while exploring deeper themes of grief, mortality, and division—shaped by Bernhard’s personal losses and the broader state of the world. Produced by Grammy-winner Ted Hutt and recorded in a converted church in Woodstock, NY, Spirits balances somber reflection with the band’s signature grit and drive.

Since their debut, The Devil Makes Three has released seven studio albums and three live recordings, steadily evolving while staying true to their mission: to tell honest stories with urgency and soul. Drawing inspiration from artists like Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, and Tom Waits, they continue to channel timeless musical traditions through a modern lens.

As Bernhard puts it, “We’ve always used these classic forms to talk about what’s happening now.” With Spirits, the band affirms their role as torchbearers of the American musical tradition—resilient, uncompromising, and more relevant than ever.
