Sabine McCalla brings "Don't Call Me Baby" to Europe

Sabine McCalla, an artist whose soulful songwriting and performances have delighted dancers and revelers in New Orleans for years, has hit the world stage with the release of Don’t Call Me Baby, her first full-length album. Co-produced by Sabine and Sam Doores of the Deslondes and featuring a cast of the sunken city’s top players, Don’t Call Me Baby firmly establishes Sabine’s own version of multi-cultural American roots music, pulling everything from Brazilian samba and tropicalia to southern soul and rock n’ roll into its orbit. 

The daughter of first-generation Haitian immigrants, Sabine was raised in New Jersey where she grew up alongside her sister Leyla McCalla (Sons of Our Native Daughters, Carolina Chocolate Drops). Introduced to chamber music at an early age, Sabine began playing classical violin in orchestras, music camps, and conservatory classes as an 8 year old. Back at home, she filled her head with Motown classics, girl group hits, Bob Marley albums, Beatles standards, and Haitian folk music. It was a wide constellation of sound that spanned more than a half century, and Sabine made it all her own, drawn to the connections binding everything together. Don't Call Me Baby shines a light on those connections. The follow-up to her critically-acclaimed Folk EP transcends genre and generation, creating a raw, rich mix of country, R&B, folk, and soul that exists on its own timeline.

American folk music doesn't come from a singular place. Instead, it stems from multiple countries, bringing a world's worth of traditions and cultures with it, creating something cohesive out of something wildly diverse. Don't Call Me Baby does the same thing. On her debut record, Sabine McCalla builds a bridge between the sounds that have captured her attention, distilling them down into new forms, gluing those disparate influences with a voice as thick and enveloping as New Orleans humidity.
