Ryan Boldt & Jenny Berkel over for a few shows in Germany and the Netherlands
16-05-2018After an extensive tour with his band The Deep Dark Woods, frontman Ryan Boldt will remain in Europe for a little while longer to play some intimate shows with Jenny Berkel.
Ryan Boldt, besides frontman, also songwriter of The Deep Dark Woods is crafting beautiful, personal song that are steeped in traditions found in places like English folk music, country, blues and 60s R&B. Judging by the range of vintage and obscure folk, country, bluegrass, blues and gospel vinyl he usually purchases and the knowledgeable manner in which he speaks of them Boldt’s appreciation of the music he favors runs very deep. His new solo project named Broadside Ballads finds him continuing to dig through the past to create spellbinding music for the present.
Boldt teams up with Jenny Berkel who has toured a lot across Canada and Europe sharing the stage with artists like Jenn Grant, Daniel Romano and Rachel Sermanni. Berkel's writing is at once gentle and hard-hitting. Her rich voice ornaments her poetry with melodies that soar high before spilling back down again. Berkel’s recent sophomore album Pale Moon Kid, was recorded with producer Daniel Romano. In the same vein as Leonard Cohen and Sandy Denny she has created a collection of folk songs that are sometimes brittle, at other times pleasantly buzzing, but always sounding unmistakably like Jenny Berkel.
