Patrick Sweany to Portugal with "Baby, It’s Late"

Patrick Sweany is back, and his long-awaited new album Baby, It’s Late feels like both a statement and a confession. The title carries weight beyond its playful sound: for longtime listeners, it’s a wink at the seven-year gap since 2018’s Ancient Noise, but for Sweany himself, it reflects a deeper theme running through the record—time slipping away, aging, and the pressure of everything that can’t be paused. In the years between albums, life didn’t slow down, and the difficult changes he faced made it harder to keep doing what he’s done for decades: write, record, tour, and live inside the music.

Still, Sweany never fully disappeared. As the world began to reopen, he returned to his Blue Monday residency at The 5 Spot in East Nashville, digging into classic 50s and 60s blues with The Tiger Beats. He also launched a new soul-funk venture, SUPER FELON, alongside an all-star cast of Nashville musicians including JD Simo and Robbie Crowell. But the most important shift was quieter: he started writing again, recording demos at home on his Tascam 388 tape machine in his Bongo Room studio, chasing something more organic and less polished than before.

That raw approach became the heartbeat of Baby, It’s Late. Sweany brought in trusted collaborators from both bands and recorded live, old-school style—no headphones, everyone in the room, letting the songs breathe and collide naturally. Producing the album himself for the first time, he shaped a direct, cathartic collection that pulls from his blues-rock roots while stretching into new territory. From the gritty opener “My Time Ain’t Long” to the reflective ballads “Christmas Parade” and “See Through,” and even the funkier “Trouble With Love,” the album captures a musician who’s been through it—but came out with something honest, alive, and worth the wait.
