New Madrid kick off first European tour today
04-01-2016In the droning 12 minutes of New Madrid's epic number, "And She Smiles", the Athens-based indie psych rock quartet condense a quarter century of the Classic City's musical legacy into one song. R.E.M.'s ramshackle guitar lines, Pylon's hypnotic velocity, and the psychedelic textures woven by the Elephant Six Collective bubble in and out of New Madrid's music. While the group owes a debt to its local predecessors, New Madrid's most recent release "Sunswimmer" proves that the group's members can craft a sound divorced from its influences.
Their first ever European endeavor is to start today in Hannover and will take them on a short round through Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and UK. Be sure to check this great live band if you have a chance! All tourdates below!
New Madrid have an album called "magnetkingmagnetqueen" on the way, and the lead single "Don't Hold Me Now" suggest it will be a good one. Propelled by skittering drums and lockstep bass and topped off by Phil McGill's mangy singsong, it sounds like an old Gang Of Four song reimagined in the translucent style of Modest Mouse's "The Moon And Antarctica". Listen through Stereogum.
