Born just minutes before Valentine’s Day 1983 in Montgomery, Alabama, Harris’ life has unfolded more like a dog-eared American novel than a conventional music career. After leaving home in his early teens, he spent years traveling by freight train, thumb, and foot before settling in rural northern New England. There, living in remote cabins without electricity or running water, he honed trades ranging from sheepherding and logging to restoration carpentry—skills that still ground him when he’s not on tour.
His latest record, JP Harris Is A Trash Fire, recorded with fellow Nashville maverick JD McPherson, is a bold and often jarring collection that Harris describes as “Avant-Country.” In an era of polished revivalism and algorithm-friendly “outlaw” branding, Harris remains proudly unvarnished. Whether backed by a full band or pared down to a duo, his songs stretch country music’s frame to fit tales of work, wandering, and the uneasy beauty of living outside the lines.
