Duke Garwood starts Europe/UK tour this month16-01-2023
Rogues Gospel is Duke Garwood’s 7th official studio album, and was released in November '22 on God Unknown Records. Though formally a blues album, it’s all about the ambience.
Recorded in drummer Paul May’s bungalow during the sweltering summer of 2020, this wonderfully elemental set conjures the unhurried vibe those sessions: Garwood’s guitar shimmering like a heat-haze, his gnarly growl incanting mantras and haiku, May holding these enigmatic grooves in place. A pervading voodoo spook suggests Dr. John at his medicinal peak, while Garwood’s laudable intolerance of genre cliché finds him seeking ley-lines linking the Southern Delta with Eastern mysticism and Krautrock’s potent reiterations on Maharaja Blues, which could easily have sloughed its trance-like furrow for another 10 glorious minutes.
The simmering, spiritual blues of Love Comet friends Garwood adding his glowering saxophones to the mix: closer Lion On Ice, meanwhile channels the wounded, heroic darkness of fallen comrade and collaborator, Mark Lanegan.
