December 19th: Birdy, Liana Flores, Katie Gregson-MacLeod, Lydia Luce with Lockeland Strings

Mon 16 Dec 2024

On December 19th the Union Chapel will see the second (annual?) concert by Lockeland Strings with a selection of fantastic artists:  Lydia Luce invites Birdy, Liana Flores and Katie Gregson-MacLeod to perform with strings. The show is completely SOLD OUT!

Lockeland Strings is a community arts organization that puts on showcases of local artists accompanied by string quintet, alongside performances of new contemporary classical pieces from local composers. With performances from Kacey Musgraves to Lucie Silvas, Lockeland Strings has grown from a house show to now hosting a second concert in London.

In 2011, Birdy suddenly appeared and scored a huge hit all over the world with a cover of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love. Her new album Portraits, her most self-confident album to date, was recently released. Birdy discovers a new world on it and even her true voice with a touch of the eighties. British-Brazilan singer-songwriter Liana Flores pairs dream-like vignettes of her intimate world with wistful guitar melodies to get lost in, combining a unique and intoxicating range of stylistic influences from British folk and classic jazz to ‘60s Brazilian bossa nova.

Katie Gregson-MacLeod was just eight years old when she first sang solo in public. Now, thanks to a life-changing summer, Katie’s songs are being produced by Grammy winners and her fans include stars of pop, stage and screen. For as long as she can remember, Katie has composed songs, poems and short stories. From her early teens, inspired by Amy Winehouse, she knew that a career in music was her future.

On her new album Florida Girl, Lydia Luce offers up a body of work graced with all the transformative beauty of watercolor, at turns delicate, dreamlike, and instantly potent in its emotional realism. The second full-length from the Fort Lauderdale-born singer/songwriter, Florida Girl matches its luminous form of indie-folk with an in-depth examination of Luce’s inner life, exploring everything from mortality to body image to the ineffable intricacy of human connection. As she bares her soul and unburdens her heart, Luce slowly embraces her own infinite complexity—ultimately arriving at the self-possessed state of mind that inspired the album’s title.
