Crocodiles bring "Upside Down In Heaven" to Breda and Utrecht

Mon 11 Nov 2024

Crocodiles, the nucleus of Brandon Welchez and Charles Rowell, return to the Netherlands with a new album of infectious power-punk-pop.

Over the years, the band have shifted and transformed, always revolving around the core nucleus of Welchez and Rowell with their ear for pure pop abandon wrapped up in the crunch and verve of great garage-punk. Now the duo are back, with Atef Aouadhi on bass and Diego Dal Bon on drums, for ten tracks that mine the depths of their love for great hooks and harmonies. Like the surging powerpop scene that is coming out of the States these days, with great bands like White Reaper and The Reflectors, Crocodiles produce the kind of music to disappear into on sun-kissed summer days.

They start off strong, starting out of the traps with the rocketing Love Beyond The Grave. It sets out their stall perfectly, aligning them alongside their peers while holding their heads high and proving that they have the chops to be up there with the leaders of the current pack. This is the kind of power-pop punk that would have lit up the airwaves a few decades back. Indebted to The Ramones, Buzzcocks, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, filtered through the 90s California sound, it draws on the genre’s lineage to great effect. It’s never going to reinvent the wheel, but if you’re after that then you’ve missed the point.
