Cactus Lee tours Europe, including shows in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany

Cactus Lee —the shape-shifting vehicle of Austin songwriter Kevin Dehan— keeps staking out its own corner of Americana on a new, self-titled album. Firmly planted in Texas tradition, the project folds the dusty ease of honky-tonk dancehalls into the reflective storytelling of outlaw country and outsider folk. Since debuting in 2019, Dehan has released six albums, quietly assembling a body of work that’s smart, hazy, and slyly funny, earning natural comparisons to masters like John Prine and Tom T. Hall.

On the new record, Dehan sounds fully at home. The songs unfold as intimate snapshots of love, family, and mortality, carried by textured arrangements and a strong sense of place. It opens with “Rabbit,” a loose shuffle that pairs a road-worn musician with the weary optimism of a traveling salesman, and settles into the gentle pulse of lead single “Roll Maggie,” a tribute inspired by Dehan’s grandmother. Elsewhere, standouts like “Got A Heart Like Rainwater Blues” and the soft ache of closer “Twenty Dollars” show an artist more concerned with honesty than shine—each track quietly capturing something deeply human, all framed by a distinctly Texan horizon.

With long-standing support from tastemakers like Aquarium Drunkard and The Austin Chronicle, Cactus Lee’s momentum continues to build. Recent tours alongside Jake Xerxes Fussell, sold-out Chicago dates, and a full-band WFMU session in Brooklyn underline Dehan’s growing reach. It’s further proof that when Texas twang is paired with a keen eye and an open heart, it travels well beyond state lines.
