American Aquarium's BJ Barham has six special solo shows coming up

Wed 11 Feb 2026

For close to two decades, American Aquarium have thrived in the hard-to-define territory where stripped-down rock-and-roll collides with hard-earned truth—and at the heart of it all is singer, songwriter, and bandleader BJ Barham. His guiding principle has never wavered: write songs that land like anthems first, then slowly unveil the deeper meaning woven into every lyric. With the band’s tenth studio release, The Fear of Standing Still, Barham takes that philosophy further than ever before. Captured live at Sunset Sound alongside producer Shooter Jennings, the album distills American Aquarium’s runaway live intensity into songs that are as volatile as they are unguarded. Barham confronts Southern identity, generational trauma, aging, fatherhood, sobriety, and the uncertain footing of modern American life—delivering his most incisive, courageous, and open-hearted writing to date. Anchoring it all is his unmistakable voice: weathered, resolute, and perfectly imperfect, the very definition of how rock-and-roll should sound.

At its core, The Fear of Standing Still serves as a snapshot of Barham’s ongoing transformation—not just creatively, but personally. Tracks like “Crier” grapple with masculinity, “Southern Roots” reckons with inherited bias, and “Babies Having Babies” stakes out a bold, deeply personal claim for self-determination. Elsewhere, quieter moments leave a lasting imprint: the nostalgic pull of childhood in “Cherokee Purples,” the creeping weight of time in “The Curse of Growing Old.” Barham writes with the awareness that music is more than release—it’s connection. That sense of shared understanding, built through candor and fearless storytelling, pulses throughout the album. American Aquarium may sound bigger and more ferocious than ever, but at its center remains Barham’s belief that rock-and-roll can remind us we’re not alone—and give us the courage to face what unsettles us most.

That same spirit is what BJ Barham will bring to the stage on his newly announced run of solo performances:
