The Dead South announced for Rock Werchter

13-02-2020

The Dead South return with their triumphant third studio album "Sugar & Joy" via Six Shooter Records. The Regina, Saskatchewan-based band enlisted the help of FAME Studio-trained producer Jimmy Nutt for the versatile 13-track album. The project combines the quartet’s love of bluegrass and country as well as Spaghetti Westerns as heard on the aptly titled song “Spaghetti.

Our producer Jimmy was amazing to work with, he believed in the songs and had the technical and musical know-how to capture exactly what we were going for,” the band says. “He knew exactly how to make the songs come alive. We’re really proud of the instrumentation on our new album. With the first two records, we were still figuring out how to fit it all together. With the help of Jimmy, we really figured out how the instruments fit together as a whole.”

The Dead South channel traditional country and bluegrass instrumentation with their combination of cello, mandolin, guitar and banjo on each track alongside stirring four-part harmonies. Songs like the foot-stomping “Heaven in a Wheelbarrow” and driving “Crawdaddy Served Cold” hold a darker sentiment despite their upbeat feel. This new collection of 13 songs is an absolute bucketful of jubilation that nestles itself comfortably in-between stories and songs both reflective and expansive. It’s obviously an exciting time for the band because Sugar & Joy feels, very much, like an accumulation of their experience on the road and somehow it’s also laden with an equal measure of wider, celebratory scope and a more focused, intimate study of the music they’re enjoying so much.

For all the fresh, classic visual imagery of the band, who consist of Nate Hilts, Scott Pringle, Danny Kenyon and Colton Crawford, they stick to the traditional setup of cello, guitar, mandolin and banjo, working off the bluegrass heritage.

With Sugar & Joy the Dead South returns to the Netherlands and Belgium in March and April. Their shows have been sold out for some time already but we're happy to announce that they add a gig on July 2nd at Rock Werchter:
